
Buttonwood Park Zoo Pays Tribute to Beloved Zookeeper
Buttonwood Park Zoo has been welcoming guests to visit its animals since it first opened back in 1894.
The late 19th century opening makes it the third-oldest zoo in New England and the 12th-oldest in the country.

Throughout that time, there have been numerous folks working tirelessly behind the scenes and this week, the zoo is recognizing many of them.

What Is Zookeeper Appreciation Week?
Each year, during the third week of July, zookeepers from all over are celebrated.
National Zookeeper Week/Zookeeper Appreciation Week is dedicated to "focusing on efforts made by all zookeepers who protect and preserve our wildlife and vanishing habitats."
Bill Sampson’s Legacy at BPZOO
Buttonwood Park Zoo shared a touching message to former keeper Bill Sampson on its Facebook page.
"His lifelong passion for animals, great and small, his unwavering dedication to the Zoo, and his role as a mentor to many are deeply cherished," the zoo posted.
William "Bill" Sampson passed away on July 13 of this year at the age of 73.

The post portrayed Bill as a beloved Senior Keeper, highlighted through a collection of photos.

As you can see, Bill's passion and love of animals was prevalent.

"As we celebrate our current Zookeepers this week, we also remember those who paved the way. Bill’s legacy of care, conservation, and connection lives on in the hearts of our team and the work we do every day," the Facebook post read.
So many of us have fond memories of going to the zoo, bringing our kids or grandkids there and spending time with the animals, both past and present.
A sentiment that is echoed through a touching tribute as BPZOO Director Shara Rapoza shared, "I have no doubt he has been reunited with Ruth, the elephant he loved so much, and they are once again roaming the woods together beyond the rainbow bridge.”
