Pittsfield Announces Fireworks On July 8 At Wahconah Park

Mayor Marchetti joined us as a guest host this morning on the radio - and we talked a lot about the fireworks situation in Pittsfield. Every 4th of July, residents enjoy and sort of /expect/ a professional fireworks show. This year it wasn't going to happen - until now, you'll just have to wait a few days.

The baseball club that normally occupies Wahconah Park, be it the Pittsfield Suns or Mets, has, for years, been responsible, along with a financial sponsor, for securing a fireworks vendor. Last year, since there was no baseball at Wahconah Park, the City of Pittsfield found a vendor. This year, they kind of dropped the ball.

There is good news, however.

The fireworks are happening after all. The city announced Wednesday, July 8 at 9:15 p.m. as the new date, with the show centered around Wahconah Park. Thursday, July 9 at 9:15 p.m. is the rain date backup.

There is one catch: Wahconah Park itself is off limits since it's still an active construction zone. So you won't be able to watch from inside the park. The city says the surrounding neighborhood and other spots around Pittsfield will work fine for viewing.

The reason this is happening at all comes down to two donors. Pittsfield Cooperative Bank and George Haddad stepped up to fund the display after the city couldn't lock down a vendor in time for the actual holiday. Mayor Peter Marchetti thanked both for bringing back what he called a beloved community tradition.

As for how they landed a fireworks company on short notice, the vendor had a show canceled in another state, which freed them up for July 8 in Pittsfield.
